LuangPrabang events:
Boat Racing festival – full moon on August 25th 2011. (The training sessions start 2 days earlier.)
A special day for LuangPrabang. In the early morning, people will go to local temples to make offerings to the monks. Later in the afternoon, long boats are being raced down the Khan river alongside the LuangPrabang peninsula.
Fire Boat Procession on Oct 12th 2011
On full moon day in October, local villagers illuminate their “fire boats”and paradethem on main street to WatXiengthongfor a religious ceremony.Then, the fire boatsare launched and float downthe Mekong river – an unforgettable experience.
South Eastern Film Festival on Dec 3 - 10th 2011
The Luang Prabang Film Festival will have screened over 60 indigenous films from Southeast Asian nations reaching 18,000 in audiences, support the production and screening of 30 local student directed films, and provide the government officials with professional training in international cultural activity planning.
Following the main festival, there will also be a road show, which will screen a small selection of films in different cities throughout the country. The Luang Prabang Film Festival is organized in partnership with the Department of Cinema, the Lao journalists association, and UNESCO Bangkok.
Hmong New Year – between mid-December and January
The Hmong people’s - mainly inhabitants of Northern Laos, celebrate their new year by paying respect to their ancestors. At the end of the harvest period, they welcome the new lunar year with a colourful festival featuring traditional music, dancing and special food.
Magha Puja - February
this important Buddhist festival sees monks and worshippers circle the city’s temples, chant and make offerings. The day marks a sermon once given by the Buddha, which outlined monastic regulations. Celebrations are more fervent in the capital Vientiane, but can nevertheless be enjoyed in Luang Prabang.
Pimai: Lao New Year celebrations – on full moon inApril
For the traditional Buddhist New Year in LuangPrabang, there is a beautiful and definitely most colorful parade in traditional Lao customes, with music and dance and the procession of the sacred Pra Bang Buddha image. In addition, Miss New Year will be elected – another tradition in Laos.
